History of Our Church

Glade Community Church was birthed in April 2006 when Pastor Gene Johnson and his wife Peggie responded to God’s call to Glade Springs Village and to plant and lead a church within the community. Northgate Baptist Church of Beckley, WV with pastor Craig Stevens sponsored and supported us during the initial organization of the church. The church met in several locations within Glade Springs including the fitness center, the Cooper Sales Office, and in several homes until finally able to rent the facility on Pavilion Drive near the front entrance. God blessed this new location with continued growth, both in numbers and in spirit.

On Sunday, February 19, 2012 Pastor Gene Johnson died after an unexpected massive stroke. He is missed daily.

Our beloved first Pastor

Rev. Harry Eugene “Gene” Johnson, Jr., age 66, of Glade Springs, Daniels, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 19, 2012, at the Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV, following a massive stroke. Born on April 14, 1945, in Atlanta, Ga, he was the son of Harry Eugene Johnson, Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth Finley Johnson. Pastor Gene was a life-long minister. God used this ordinary man to do extra ordinary things. Six years ago God called him and his wife to West Virginia to establish a church in Glade Springs Resort. He was presently pastoring at Glade Community Church in Glade Springs, Daniels. He had previously served as pastor of Bethany Baptist Church in Newport, Delaware, was former youth minister at Ogletown Baptist Church in Newark, Del., and was the former minister of youth and singles at Hermitage Hills Baptist Church in Hermitage, Tenn. He will be dearly missed by his best friend and soul mate Peggie Bowman Johnson, to whom he was married for 45 years. He was a loving father to Regina “Gina” Jarrell of Daniels, and Jennifer Paige Peller, who preceded him in death, and Amanda Bailey married to Michael Bailey of Newark, Del. His grandchildren he loved and held so dear are Corey Peller, Zachary Peller, Laken Jarrell, and Bowman Bailey. Funeral services were conducted to celebrate the life of pastor Gene at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 2 pm, with Rev. Brian Harmon officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. His last two sermons spoke about learning to have kind, caring relationships with all other people as the meaning of the life that God intended for us. As Gene closed so many messages, “In Christ’s Love , Until He Returns.”
